I have Salix 13.1.2 (i386) installed on an Intel 865-chipset system, and I've been having a bit of trouble with the Internet. It works, but DNS lookup is slow - it'll take 10-15 seconds to make initial contact with a website, and may occasionally pause for another 10-15 seconds after that (trying to access resources linked from other sites, maybe?) Once it's gotten itself sorted out, everything proceeds quite nicely, and subsequent accesses are quick and easy, until it decides that it needs to re-check the domain name (typically after 5-10 minutes of not accessing a particular site.)
I know this is an issue with this computer, as both my XP laptop (wireless) and Power Mac (wired, on the same router) get perfectly nice Internet access without these aggravating delays. I also know it's not a browser issue, as it happens with every browser I've used on this machine (Midori, Epiphany, Firefox, and elinks.) I'm reasonably sure it's not a hardware issue, since the actual transfer seems to work perfectly (and I've tried swapping cables, with no improvement.)
Unfortunately, my networking knowledge isn't quite up to determining exactly what would cause this, or how to fix it. I'm aware of a DNS-prefetch plugin for Firefox, but that isn't going to help me with elinks, which I also use on a regular basis, and wouldn't address the root cause anyway. Can anybody give me some insight, or direct me to a place where I can find out what the problem is?
