Salix USB Installation

Post by Sunrayshadow »

Hello Members,

my Name is Marco and im Living in Hamburg/Germany.

Excuse me please, but my Englisch is not so good, i left the School over 25 Years ago ;)

I have a Question:

Is there a Possability to Install Salix from an USB-Stick with Unetbootin?

My Netbook has no Cd-Rom so i want to install from the USB-Drive. I used the last 3 Years Sidux and i want to try Salix. I think ist very good.

Thanks and Greetings,

Marco

Yes, it's possible. I have done exactly that to install Salix in my netbook. Maybe you'll need toe exit the installation, mount the usb stick somewhere, enter the installation again by running setup and select the option to install from a premounted directory. I don't really remember though, it may work with no tweaking at all.

I confirm it's working this way. Don't remember the exact steps though.

I only install by USB stick. I've never used a Salix CD :)

1. Create your USB stick with unetbootin.
2. At Salix installation chose "Install from hard disk"
3. Enter the device of your USB stick: This probably is /dev/sdb1 if you only have one hard disk. Please note that few sticks are mounted by /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sdb1.
4. The next dialog want's to know where the Salix packages are located on the USB stick. The correct answer here is /salix
5. Everything should work now.

FWIW

It also works with the manual from zenwalk.

My biggest problem was a bad working USB. It's funny that when a part of the software is installed to your harddrive, with the second install it goes super-fast. ;)

Wouldn't it be an idea to put these methods in http://www.salixos.org/wiki/index.php/Category:FAQ ?

Enter the device of your USB stick: This probably is /dev/sdb1 if you only have one hard disk. Please note that few sticks are mounted by /dev/sdb instead of /dev/sdb1.
Experts will know this, but for newbies: If you have a netbook, e.g. an eee with two solid state disks, the usb stick may available under /dev/sdc. The last character identifies the drive, more precisely a, b, c and so forth.
