Realtek gigabit lan adaptor

Post by toothandnail »

As mentioned in the thread about enabling cpu throttling for Intel desktops, the machine is an MSI motherboard, 4 GB RAM, Intel E5700 CPU. It has an on-board Realtek gigabit NIC. Trouble is, there seems to be no driver loading for the NIC. Running the system under OpenSUSE (or Fedora 15), the The driver that is loading (lspci was run under OpenSUSE), r8169, does not seem to work correctly. It can ping the gateway, and will load some web pages, but stalls on others (for instance going to eBay works, but attempting to go to MyEbay stall and never loads).

Under Salix, there seems to be no driver for this chip loading at all.

The data I have on the onboard NIC is as below:

Code: Select all

02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 03)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. Device 7592
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 41
        I/O ports at d800 [size=256]
        Memory at fdfff000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=4K]
        Memory at fdff8000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=16K]
Expansion ROM at feae0000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 3
        Capabilities: [50] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
Capabilities: [70] Express Endpoint, MSI 01
Capabilities: [ac] MSI-X: Enable- Count=4 Masked-
        Capabilities: [cc] Vital Product Data
        Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting
        Capabilities: [140] Virtual Channel
Capabilities: [160] Device Serial Number 03-00-00-00-68-4c-e0-00
        Kernel driver in use: r8169
Does anyone know what driver should be used for this? And why its not loading automatically? Anyone using this NIC with Salix?

For the moment, I've got a PCI Realtek 10/100 NIC installed, but it would be nice to be able to use the onboard gigabit NIC. :) I'd also like an answer for myself, because I have a Gigbyte motherboard I'm hoping to use soon which has the same gigabit NIC onboard.

:) Thanks again. I'll give that a try and see if it works for the MSI board (then try for my Gigabyte board).
