Following on from an old thread, I'd like to see the xfce4-volumed package installed as standard from the next Xfce installation disc.

I've tried it on a number of laptops recently and each time it has saved me configuring the buttons manually. On top of that the package itself is only 25k so this has got to be a winner .

How does everyone feel about this?

Seriously though, how much overhead would be associated with running the daemon? And is it useful for desktop PCs, or just for laptops?

The overhead is tiny and there will be benifits for desktop users with media keyboards too.

A Tale of Two PCs, each running Salix 13.37:

The best of times: Laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.66 GHz CPU, 3 GB RAM, 250 GB SATA drive. Here volumed would be handy.

The worst of times: Old tower with a Pentium III 700 MHz CPU, 640 MB RAM, 40 GB IDE drive, and a vintage IBM clicky 101-key keyboard (great for carpal tunnel syndrome). Here volumed would be just one more unneeded background task, taking up scarce resources.

Sure, the benefits of volumed for many folks would likely outweigh the disadvantages for those few of us keeping old hardware alive.

As an alternative to "tyranny of the majority" though, it would be useful for each Salix flavor to include a list of packages which could be safely uninstalled, and daemons which could be disabled, for users wanting to maximize performance.

Would that be a fair compromise between Slackware's lean-and-mean roots, and the signature convenience of Salix'?

I would say these users could avail themselves of the "core" or maybe "basic" install options, no?

Or use the LXDE version... Just a thought.

Edit: You can also disable the daemon via the 'Session and Startup' dialog in the Xfce settings.
