I have Salix 13.37 Xfce installed on an HP 2133 Netbook.

While I have been able to get most of the video files to play, I have not been able to get parole to recognize the Mpeg-2 Transport layer files (.m2ts) produced by my camcorder. I'm sure it should be possible as Dragon Player on Kubuntu can play them, but this machine doesn't really have the grunt for KDE.

Is there either a set of codecs needed for this format that I've overlooked (i have ffmpeg, all the gst-pugin packages and the multimedia codecs installed), or an alternative video player that can recognize the format?

Try VLC - it plays practically anything. Failing that,maybe you could use Handbrake to convert the files to another format.

Parole is a good media player but just like mimosa said why don't u use VLC! is the best mediaplayer in the world. If u use KDE, SMPlayer is another great choise.
Winff is another great file converter (available in Sourcery) but u can also use Hanbrake.

Thanks for the hints, that's closer but still no cigar. Both VLC & SMPlayer recognize the file, but although the sound plays, the video shows only the first frame [*]. (OTOH, I did spot an option in SMPlayer which allows rotation of the video, thus making it possible to view the videos I wanted to analyse on my Kubuntu desktop machine).

[*] Do they need h/w video acceleration (a problem with a VIA card--I must admit I've not checked which driver it uses though I'd guess it ought to be openchrome)?

I have a Via graphic card in my laptop wich use the xf86-video-openchrome driver with 1440x900 resolution, It is a weak graphic card... don't support a 3d acceleration.

I would also try mplayer2 (not MPlayer).

That one probably uses xine as backend, so you als may want to try xine (xine-ui + xine-lib)

mplayer2 does play the video, but in slow motion (with the sound running at normal speed) so I think that the cpu doesn't have the grunt to handle the decoding in real time.
xine started to play, then crashed (but does work for some other video clips).

Yes, it sounds like your PC can't handle it. What's the cpu usage when playing this file?
