I have just tried using the Sakis 3G script and I have a couple of questions in that context. I followed the info provided by anton in this post http://www.salixos.org/forum/viewtopic. ... 5&start=10. Everything seems to work, however:
1) I don't get prompted for a dial-up number.
2) I am provided with two alternatives - Telenor and bibob. Telenor is the setting I use on my 3G smart phone and when I used usb_modeswitch under Ubuntu, but my actual provider (CBB) never shows up like it did under usb_modeswitch.
3) I see that there is an option to compile an embedded usb_modeswitch, is this something I should do?
4) It is kind of irritating getting prompted for my root password every time I connect by way of 3g. Anyway to get around this?
While everything works, I am wondering if the setup is correct or whether I risk incurring extra charges because it may not be setup correctly.

I don't think you should. That information should be included in the carrier settings in your sim. You don't have to touch that.

What sakis3g version did you download? There is one that has usb_modeswitch bundled with it. If you get that, you don't need to install usb_modeswitch separately. If you get the one that doesn't have usb_modeswitch bundled, you'll have to install usb_modeswitch separately.

You could use sudo and eliminate the need to provide a password. man sudo and man sudoers for more info.

What is your plan? How are you getting billed? Is it by traffic or by connection time? If it's by traffic, even if you just connect many times and don't do anything with the connection, you won't get any significant charges. If it's by connection time, you'll have to make sure you disconnect when you don't actually use your connection.

I'm billed by traffic, so I should be OK.

From what I can see, usb_modeswitch was packaged with earlier versions of Salix, has this stopped because wicd doesn't support 3g? I personally like wicd a lot, but I find it to be counter productive that the developers seem to out of hand reject support for 3g in future releases.
