Coming from Ubuntu.......

Hi,

Been using Ubuntu for a while, I like to know a few things.

1) Can I upgrade version to version automatically like Ubuntu's synaptic?

2) Is there a deb-like file where you can just click it and it will install for you the software?

3) Is Salix newbie friendly or do I need to memorise many commands?

Thanks.

Hi qidachyi and welcome :)

It will be possible to upgrade to the next version when that is released, but it will not be a one-click thing. But a wiki article will be created with detailed instructions on how to do it.

No. To install a package you have downloaded manually, open a root terminal and use installpkg packagename.txz.

You probably won't need the terminal for everyday tasks, but some things are always done easier and faster in the terminal. In short, Salix is friendly to newbies that would like to learn more about how their system works. :)

That is of course for the packages you may have downloaded 'manually' which you should only do if you really know what you are doing whereas the recommended way, if you are a beginner, is rather to use the 'point & click' gslapt program who will list all packages available in official Salix & Slackware repositories & will manage dependencies in your stead.

Of course you won't need to memorize a lot of commands, but a good advice: Get used to some commands because a terminal can ease a lot of things ;)
