[Solved] XFCE problems

I'm running 64bit salix 1337, a couple of months or more now, but I mistakenly downloaded the KDE version of it, which I really didn't want, as I had gotten accustomed to xfce in the last version Salix. So, I used the package manager and d/l the xfce packages (not all but the main xfce and some others that do allow it work). Problem is , lots of the programs now won't run in xfce, I can understand the KDE programs not running, or at least I'm not that surprised by it. But when XFCE boots and startsup, the "hints and tips" box contains nothing, I can't use gslapt unless I wait for the update icon to appear on the taskbar, what have I hosed here? I try gslapt from terminal and get "no protocol specified" and unable to open display 0: : 0 which I don't understand either. Do I just need to uninstall the kde packages, or d/l the other ISO for xfce and start all over?
Hate to have to start all over , after getting that NVIDIA prop driver installed properly-I have an old 5500 card that newer kernels and xorg won't work with currently.
Thanks for any insight.

I'm not sure what you are doing here, but first try:
1. install gdm
2. remove kdm

The easiest thing to do would be to download the xfce iso and install that instead. Otherwise, you'll have to add all the extra parts that make the xfce edition yourself. Which requires you to know which ones these are. Your problem with gslapt is probably because you're running it in xfce without having the ktsuss package installed. But you'll probably notice other things misbehaving like that.

Thanks gapan, that is probably what is best anyway. I just remembered how easy it was to add kde back when i had the Xfce version, but it doesn't work in reverse!
Thenktor>I will try that, thanks. I don't understand your reply, exactly. if I posted in the wrong place, I apologize. SEarched all over the place and couldn't find anybody else who'd tried to do this same thing
*** Mark this one solved. The ktuss package downloaded ok, and it seems to have fixed the problems.
Thanks for your help!
