I installed VLC with slapt-get and there is no sound. In the audio tab, Audio Device is grayed out. Also Dragon Player does not work at all. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I just looked at vlc and that item is greyed out too - until I actually play something.

Rebooting sometimes cures odd glitches I get with one app or another's sound. I assume you're getting sound from apps other than the two you mention?

I just checked VLC again. I am getting sound from my mp3 and flac files. Still no sound when playing DVDs.

Do you have all codecs etc installed? Especially libdvd*?

"Install mutimedia codecs" from the menu, if you haven't already. :)

They are all installed through the menu.

I will double check when I get home for the one mentioned by Shador. Thanks!

I had installed K9Copy and Xine as this was one of the dependents of K9Copy. Could these be the culprits?

If to your computer is connected web camera, then the system may incorrectly detect a sound card to use. Check it out in the menu (Xfce) --> System --> ALSA sound card, also Multimedia --> Mixer --> Sound Card.

"ALSA sound card" - this is a part of salixtools-gtk, command "gksu gtkalsasetup" in the terminal. Try also the command "alsamixer" (alsa-utils) in the terminal.
