Salix (and Slack) N00b

Hello!
So I've run Arch for about a year. I really liked it a lot, but I had to drop it due to getting tired of keeping my fingers crossed every time I updated. I've just left Ubuntu Studio. That multisearch ordeal really left a really bad taste in my mouth. Plus, I really wanted something more snappy (XFCE in particular), and something that felt like what I have come to understand as Linux. A distro with a friendly, helpful community is perfect.
I installed Salix last Thursday, and thus far I am very happy with it. A couple little annoyances, but those should be simple to fix.
I loved pacman, and I'm competent with apt. Slapt is new to me. To my knowledge, it's pretty close to apt. Thus far I've used Gslapt to update my machine. Would reading up on using slapt on a Slackware site teach me proper usage, or is there a special consideration for Salix? And are there any other repos that I'm not aware of? I was a little surprised to not find Blender or Songbird in the repos.
I hope that Salix is the answer to my distro-hopping. So far I am impressed and happy. I hope to become a part of the community, though I know virtually nothing. I would like to learn, and I'm sure I'll be able to offer something at some point.
Thanks for your time!
