Adding my fresh leaf ;)

Just wanted to send my heartfelt branch shaking to fellow Bonsai...after much Distrowatch surfing and distrohopping ..i think Salix has found a comfortable rootball in my Sony Vaio
As usual i came to PCs,being force-fed Microsoft Windows, and to be honest i always had a reasonably stable time with MS,never encountered the 'blue screen of death' the only regular issue i had was whenever i tried to transfer mediabased files to Cd/Dvd/Usb they were corrupted to unuseability! But the one thing about MS,it worked, but there was a sense it didnt belong to you,a bit like you had hired clothes from someone else to attend a meeting, and their tastes were dull and conservative to boot!So onto Linux...
Herald Mark Shuttleworth and his mighty Canonical marketing budget,it was the obvious first introduction to Linux..had much fun ..learned a few things .Debian/Knoppix/Ubuntu (in that order) have created an impressive base for just about anything you want to put your mind to...however i came to Ubuntu just before the Unity debacle..and discovered how much self confessed geekdom can moan so unnecessarily (hmm maybe they were all secret Windows users-they despise change?) i found the Unity interface quite intuitive, but with an aging ATI chip ,unable to take reliable control of the 3D aspects. My criticism of Ubuntu was just a sense...hmm it was flimsy ..just a feeling that it was like the thin plastic inserts in chocolate boxes...it can hold the milk and plain in place ..but you wouldnt want to make a liferaft from it o_0 ..im keeping my eye on Ubuntu ..its transition to X-replacement Wayland with Enlightenment and few others i think is exciting ..but its a wide country so onto new pastures...
After many no-go's of Linux/Unix ..just not installing ..the most success i had with Mepis and Sabayon ..both worked well ..recognised hardware immediately ..and had many months troublefree expreiences with them ..however with both they seemed to degrade...just little niggling things that developed into terminal issues ..my thoughts too ..was both Mepis and Sabayon arent very happy on laptops..also rumours of Compiz related issues with Sabayon made me survey the marketplace.
I played sensible this time ..instead of just expecting the perfect distro to drop onto my lap..i asked' what do i WANT from a distro'...so i came to Salix ..plumped for a LXDE flavor...installed like a dream..and just a feeling my laptop if it could choose factory settings Salix LXDE would be it :)....from reading a few forum posts i feel in good hands with development team and users ..at least on a par with the Mepis forums ..just as said previously in posts theres a sparseness of 'problems' in Salix ;)
So thats a potted history i hope many years of happy Bonsai pruning is in store ..and i hope as i learn more i can share a few gems of knowledge and bring the whole community forward.
To kick off the proceedings ...i had read a few things with regards to netpkg ..distros like Volta and Draco i found interesting ...and im trying to get my head around MirBSD ...so my question is ..how difficult is integrating netpkg into Salix ..and what if any issues may i encounter with regards to laptop especially with it being a reknown pernickity Sony Vaio ?
Hope all your weeks are yumski...keep your roots damp and get plenty of sunshine ;)

Hi Deja69, welcome to Salix. :)

I'm guessing you mean pkgsrc, not netpkg. The answer is probably a lot of work is needed. A lot of things will probably not work. And you will end up with something that will be neither Salix/Slackware nor BSD. Do a web search for "slackware pkgsrc". That will give you an idea.

Thanks Gapan..and yes pkgsrc is what i meant o_0 lol ...
It is just Salix seems a wonderful rock to experiment from with the stability to withstand the 'i wonder if' aspirations of a newbie-to-intermediate user..or thats the sense i get :) ..i have more foolishness with regards to Minix and Illumian :)
Just with all things techie, the more you learn..the more you NEED to learn more !!! which is kinda fun and forehead-to-keyboard frustrating in equal measure!
Either way,i feel ive found a home with Salix..it pays for itself simply for the selection of screensavers - its fun watching them ...the bouncing cow a personal favourite :)
Have a cool week !

Just an addendum ...and another reason maybe why Salix devs prefer slapt-get ..i notice im not the onlty one with interest in pkgsrc...so heres a link from a blogger explaining that pkgsrc may not be as it seems (might be useful for some-its from 2007  ) http://michielvwessem.wordpress.com/200 ... kgsrc_bad/
