I can su to root in the console before entering the X system, once in, i cannot su to root it doesn't accept my root password in the terminal. Is there a file i can edit? thank you.

Probably an issue with the keymap (they can be different on tty and gui). Try typing your password plaintext in X and on a tty. Either you're aware of the difference between keymaps, try to choose different ones which might be closer to each other or which is probably easiest you switch to a password which doesn't need problematic keys.

Chose the other spanish kbd option, from the Main menu ->System -> Keyboard
