ep1038 :: Interview with George Vlahavas and Andreas born of the SalixOS project
I've been using SalixOS, a Slackware derivative, for a while now and I wanted to share my love of it with it's developers and with all of you. If you find this interview or this GNU/Linux distro compelling please go to http://www.salixos.org and give it a try.

Thank you so much for listening. -pokey

P.S. Some people enjoy finding mistakes. For their enjoyment, I have probably included a few.
http://hackerpublicradio.org/eps/hpr1038.mp3 (MP3 audio, 20.4 MB)
http://hackerpublicradio.org/eps/hpr1038.ogg (Ogg Audio, 35.5 MB)
http://hackerpublicradio.org/eps/hpr1038.spx (Speex Audio, 9.1 MB) - Use MPlayer to play it.

No. I think that some might be interested in a page with description since it is more appealing for most and more persuasive to be shared, and also I think that some might like to listen to the Speex audio jut as I do ;-)

I listen to podcasts on an mp3 player. But whatever your preference, its the content of the interview that listeners should take from it.

@Tim CowChip,

Thanks for posting the link to that interview; I listened to it and not only enjoyed it, but learned some tidbits about Salix that I didn't know.
  • The base team of developers knew each other from other projects and had worked together on Zenwalk.
  • There was some background given on how the bonsai was chosen as the distro's logo.
  • The project's original codename was "Alcoholics," which was coined by thenktor (Thorsten).
  • The graphical installer used on the Live CD is the work of Akuna (Pierrick).
  • Sourcery, the graphical frontend for slapt-src, is written in Python and is gapan's work.
  • gapan (George) provided a clear explanation of package management in Salix and the differences between Gslapt, slapt-get and slapt-src.
  • The Xfce version is the "grandfather" of Salix OS, as almost all of the devs were using Xfce when version 13.0 was released.
  • Both shador (Andreas) and gapan emphasized that every contributor is welcome, regardless of his/her country of origin. Even if you can't code, you can contribute in other ways, such as providing support in the User Forum, writing documentation, translating and/or packaging. (gapan said that it's easy to create packages for Salix/Slackware because they are very basic tarballs).
