In praise of Salix

I have to say, this distribution is a winner. I keep trying out other distros (briefly) and I always wind up coming back to Salix.

I'm not exactly sure what the winning formula is - perhaps just the combination of Slackware and working dependency management - but for convenience, Salix beats everything IMHO. Whatever you guys are doing, please, keep doing it.

Mind, the "for convenience" part is important. I wouldn't use Salix for a web server for instance, because it's not as strong on security as e.g. Debian or FreeBSD. That's a nonissue on a well-configured desktop, but on a server it could bite someone.

Actually I don't see why a Slackware/Salix core installation for a web server should be more vulnerable than Debian or FreeBSD.

No security updates for the kernel. :)

OTOH, it's not very hard to compile a custom GrSecurity kernel (I've done it).

At least we don't have funny patches for OpenSSL like Debian   :geek:
