How do I connect to the internet? [SOLVED]

Hello,
This is my first day with Salix. It looked easy and yet it's taken most of the day to not get very far. I only have wifi available here and so I've been trying to get the BCM 802 firmware for my wireless card... couldn't install VM on my Wheezy, it can't find the kernel headers it wants. Finally just copied my firmware b43 dir from Debian onto the /lib/firmware of Salix... and the wireles card works (but it did cut off once).
Right, so I can also connect to the wifi with wicd. But I can't open a web page or reload packages with gslapt. What else do I need to get wifi up - I wan to run the b43-fwcutter as well to make sure the firmware is steady.
Er, it's now up and running. Strange but that's what I needed!
