Hello from Canada

I'm new to Salix OS (although not new to Linux). I am very happy since I finally feel like I found my perfect Linux distro:

I started learning Linux with Slackware 8 (where I became really comfortable with the OS), and until recently I was using Arch Linux. Lately (for the last couple of years) I've started distro-hopping because of one thing I didn't like about Arch, which is the fact that it's rolling release. I wanted something stable and a distro where I can go at least one day without some update to a package).

Over the period, I've tried many different distros, and they all had their pros and cons. After the endeavour I found that arch and slackware are best suited for me. As I mentioned before, the problem with Arch is that it's rolling release. Slackware is great, but one thing that I really missed was easy software installation. I found myself going to slackpkg.org and downloading each script, executing them by hand and it was tedious. Arch counterpart of slackbuild (AUR) I find is much better.

Salix seems to be the bridge in the gap and I feel like this is exactly what I've been looking for. It is built on Slackware, which is stable and solid, and brings in modern desktop implementations. I have read in Salix reviews (for example on Distrowatch) and I am looking forward to learning more about the distro (it also mentioned the goodness of the Salix community).

All that to say, Hello! :-)

Welcome, kcirick! :) Salix has a few other home comforts as well as slapt-get, and a range of editions from Maté to Ratpoison. (If you're a KDE fan you may also want to check out Slackel - search this forum for more info). The community is indeed a friendly place.

Thanks for all the welcomes :-)

I want to start contributing (screenshots, tutorials, some documentations) on the forum. For SS and other artwork, the forums says I have to have minimum of 3 posts, so I'll just have to wait.

Btw, the forum seems to be down quite a bit (and inconsistent). Is there a reason for this?

We have some server problems ATM. I should be able to work on it shortly.

Also, I might want to contribute some items to the wiki. May I ask for an account please?
