Lately when opening a xmessage I get the following warning:

$ xmessage bum
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset

What does cause this and how to correct?

xmessage is a very old X application that has no understanding of UTF-8. Either don't use it and replace it with matedialog/zenity/xdialog/kdialog or run it with:

Studying kdialog will keep me busy during the Holidays. Did not know it exists.
BTW the error message with xmessage does not affect its performance.
