avahi daemon under 14.0 XFCE

I'm running Salix64 Xfce, fully updated. I've just installed avahi, followed the instructions in the Slackware readme and attempted to start both the avahai daemon and the avahi dns daemon. Neither is returning any sort of error, but neither shows up in the process list, and any attempt to start the Avahi SSH server browser returns an error -
Is anyone successfully running Avahi under Salix?
