Mate desktop on salix14-xfce

Post by rsal »

I want to use mate desktop on salix. Since salix14-mate.iso is not available, can I install all the mate components on salix14-xfce(32bit) and login to mate desktop? Or would I be better off with salix13.37-mate.iso install?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks. The command 'slapt-get --install-set mate' worked very well and I am writing from Mate desktop now. However, when I click on any 'Places' like 'Home folder', it opens it in Thunar rather than in Mate-file-manager (caja). I checked in System>Preferences> 'Preferred applications', where Mate-file-manager is the preferred file manager and not Thunar. Why is Thunar opening up on clicking any button under Places of the main menu and how can I correct it? Thanks for your help.

Because thunar is set as the default file manager in your system. If I can remember correctly, you can open a caja window (the mate file manager), then while holding shift, right click on any directory. Select "Open with", input caja in there and make sure you have the box that says to use the same action in the future. That should fix it, although I'm writing this from memory right now.

I tried this method but the 'Places' are still opening in Thunar.

The correct sequence is Right click on directory/Open with/Other Application/Use a custom command/Input "caja" in the box (wihtout quotes)/Check the "Remember this application...". Is that what you did?

Earlier I had selected 'File Browser' from list of applications (which used to open caja) and now I also tried by inputting caja in custom command but still 'Places' are opening in Thunar. 'Remember this application' was checked both times.

Just tried it. It works, clicking now on Home in caja desktop caja opens and not thunar. :)

It did'nt work on my system. So I uninstalled Thunar. On clicking one of the Places, it asked me for application to use and I entered caja in command box. Then it worked. I have now reinstalled Thunar (its red band at top when it is root is a very useful reminder; it should be there in other file managers also). Everything is as desired now. Thanks for your help.
