hi
I have a problem with my printer, is an OfficeJet 5610 all-in-one, I got in configured ok as a printer but xsane tells me that it can't access the scanner device :(
if I use xsane as root I can scan ok, but as a normal user it's no cigar
what can I do? I added my user to the lp group but still can't scan

The groups command gives you a overview of your groups:

Code: Select all

thorsten[~]$ groups
users floppy audio video cdrom plugdev power netdev scanner
There is a scanner group, check if you have that, too ;)

I tried loging out and loging in and it works

Code: Select all

rob[~]$ groups
users lp floppy audio video cdrom plugdev power netdev scanner
I guess adding the lp group worked, and btw I already was in the scanner group before adding lp

Yes, the lp group is also needed to access a scanner. I'm adding it in the default list of groups...

Is the lp group always needed to access the scanner or for parport scanners only? I'm not sure if I've added my friend to the lp group on his PC and his scanner works.

I know it's needed for my hp usb scanner/printer.

USB is only the transport layer. There are as well possibilities to speak the parallel port protocol over USB. USB seems to be able to simulate other (hardware) interfaces, the most at USB is software.
