Hey Guys,

I tried to install Salix OS XFCE and got the Kernel Message that my CPU don't have PAE Support.
It's a Laptop from 2005 with a Intel Pentium CPU. I have Puppy Linux 5.6 Slacko installed but i don't like it because it use Rox and there is a
bad Pack Manager. I tried many Distros but no one (except very light Distros with a look and feel from Win 95) supports Hardware without PAE.
The Point is i read in a News from 2009 that Salix OS had shipped Versions with a NON-PAE Kernel.
Can someone make a iso with the NON-PAE Kernel or how can i build it myself or is there already a NON-PAE Version ?
Of Course i tried already to replace Rox with XFCE but it dont realy works. OK it runs but some icons are missing and its not realy stable.
It would be great if someone can help

I believe that Salix 13.37 still had support for such hardware. It also shouldn't be too hard to build a suitable kernel for more recent Salix versions. The forthcoming Ratpoison edition will probably ship with such a kernel (but it may be some time before it is released).

I'm not sure, but there may already be some discussion about how to approach this on the forum. However, the simplest option is 13.37, which is still supported and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

If it is'nt to hard to build the the Kernel is there a how-to ?
I found the Salix OS 13.37 files(http://sourceforge.net/projects/salix/files/13.37/) but cant find a non-pae version. Only 32bit Versions. I dont want to burn a CD, boot it up and just read again that there is no pae support

I'm pretty sure there is the support you need, as standard. It was discontinued with 14.0. I'd recommend giving it a try.

On the 32-bit side of things, there
are both SMP (multiple processor capable) and non-SMP (single
processor) kernels. The non-SMP kernel is mostly intended for machines
that can't run the SMP kernel, which is anything older than a Pentium
III, and some models of the Pentium M that don't support PAE.

Since SalixOS is 100% compatible to Slackware, I think you can use the non-SMP-Kernel from the Slackware-Packages

After booting with Salix XFCE 13.37 iso cd in prompt press TAB key then you will see huge.s and hugesmp.s.
The non-pae kernel is huge.s so type huge.s and press enter and procced to installation.

If you want a very recent slackware 14.1 and salix based distro with non-pae kernel then take a look on distrowatch for slackel 5.0 openbox.
You can also there type huge.s on prompt to boot and proceed to installation.

Thanks djemos I didn't realise you had to explicitly select the correct kernel.

Slackel Openbox is also an excellent choice, particularly with older hardware, because it's lighter than xfce. Lighter still is Ratpoison (which is available for 13.37) with a selection of lightweight command-line apps.

As sammy noted, you can use the slackware huge.s kernel with salix 14.0. The reason it is not included in the 14.0 iso any more is size.

However, you can probably remaster the 14.0 iso to include the huge.s kernel. I haven't actually tried doing it this way, but it will probably work.

1. Open up the iso. isomaster should work, but if you know how to use mkisofs you could also do it manually.
2. Get the nosmp.img file from here: http://pnboy.pinguix.com/gapan/salix/in ... /nosmp.img
3. Put the nosmp.img file inside the isolinux directory of the iso
4. Create a huge.s directory inside the kernels directory of the iso
5. Get all 3 files from here: http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/slac ... 0/kernels/
6. Put those files inside the huge.s directory you just made.
7. Get the kernel-huge and kernel-modules packages from here: http://ftp.cc.uoc.gr/mirrors/linux/slac ... ux-3.2.45/ (don't get the ones that have smp in their filenames. Also you only need the txz files).
8. Put the kernel-huge and kernel-modules txz files inside the salix/kernels directory in the iso
9. Get the kernel-firmware txz file from the same slackware repo.
10. Put the kernel-firmware txz file inside the salix/core directory and remove the previous kernel-firmware files that are already there.
11. Save the iso to a new file.
12. When booting the iso, at the first prompt you get, you should type: huge.s

That will of course bring the iso size way over what a CD can hold and you'll need a DVD for the installation. Or you could remove all smp kernel files from the iso you create.

And indeed, the ratpoison 14.0 iso will include the huge.s kernel, but ratpoison is a totally different beast.
