Post by thomastt37 »

Hi Group..So far I haven't been able to find this in the repository, but it is available from Sourceforge. However I have been unable to install it in Salix 13.37 KDE 64 bit,can someone advise whether this is actually possible in Salix/Slackware.Widely available for DEB/RPM etc

First off, did you look at the README / Get info to see if anything is needed for this to work?

Secondly, what happens when you try to build it? How does the build fail?

EDIT Scrub that, I read your post too quickly - thought you were talking about Sourcery / slapt-src

Assuming it's not available there, it's simp0ly a case of downloading the tarball and trying to build it. What exactly did you do and what exactly happened when you did?

Thank you Mimosa, after more investigation it "Great Little Radio Player" doesnt appear to be available for any Slackware based Operating system which is a pity because its a nice little programme.[even available for ARCH Linux !!]
Salix seems to be very limited as to what one can install from exterior sources, correct me please if I am wrong?Seems as though if its not in the repository thats it!
I would like to install Chromium browser but that doesn't seem to be available either.
On this basis I dont think that I shall be trialing Salix much longer..unless matters improve.

That's not quite it: there is also the slackbuilds.org repository, accessible with slapt-src or its GUI, Sourcery. These are not packages but buildscripts. One is available for Chromium.

I suggest you have a look at the package management section in the Salix Startup Guide (this is for 13.37, but still largely applicable, and about package management, entirely so):

http://docs.salixos.org/wiki/Salix_Startup_Guide

Salix has the largest repositories of any Slackware-based distribution. Nonetheless, whatever distro you use, you will probably eventually reach the point where you want to build your own packages from source.

You can try rpm2tgz. Report back if it worked.

gapan's correct (of course:), but pay close attention to the required dependencies (and their dependencies), as always.
