I’ll go out on a limb here and probably get squashed about this, but I just had to suggest it…

Do you remember that nice conky config running at startup in the likes of Crunchbang? Well, I would just love to see it in Salix… nothing that elaborate, though, because of the colorful wallpaper and all… but maybe a simple one-liner at the top of the screen with just some basic info… The rest would be up to the end-user, personalizing as he/she sees fit…

Too much to ask? Compromising the whole Slack philosophy? I hope not…

I do not know Crunchbang Linux. But a very quick research showed me that it is an Ubuntu fork. Salix OS uses original Slackware packages with some additional packages and dependency support from our community via an own repository. There are no patches to the original packages got directly from Slackware.

You are free to provide a package for the conky thingy.

tuxtemplar: I'm undecided if we should have it by default on the iso. For me some system informations are mandatory (I'm still using gkrellm), but I don't know if every user wants to see them (even basic ones). Furthermore I've often seen problems with conky like crashes or other weird behaviour (maybe related to a bad config?). Are there differences in config for different xorg drivers?

Anyway, I have to apologize here. You see, I'll have to be perfectly honest with you. I've been using ubuntu and mint for about 5 years now. I decided that the time had come to make the switch into something more interesting... I thought about slackware, and discovered this little jewel which seems perfect to get me started as a slacker-in-traning (specially because of the codec installation script-thingy in salix, which is a downside of zenwalk)...

This also means that, as an ex-ubuntu convert, I don’t exactly know what you are talking about, which puts me off sometimes of saying something in the forums because the feedback is a bit overwhelming for a noob like me.

In any case, from my experience, I reckon the basic config.rc script won’t have any problems. I realize some people complain about it flickering sometimes (which even happened to me once). Even so, that all went away when I changed my .rc to have it display conky in its own (yet transparent) window. As such, I reckon it’s safe to say that the default script will be compatible with any X drivers.

I guess the crunchbang guys though about that sort of inconveniences too before including it in their ISO. I don’t know…

Despite that, I guess you’re right. Some people are just not that interested in having it display that sort of info, which would make it a useless effort.

On the other hand, people also say that the abovementioned ubuntu fork only got all of that attention because of conky:) Who knows!

Btw, I used to use gkrellm and also loved it

But, for now, I guess I'll let you experts do the important decisions and just stay quiet

This flickering and disappearing is something, that I've had at my last conky tests. Without solving these for every (Xfce) setup, it's no option for inclusion.

No! Because of the super great Openbox window manager that I'm using, too

I had the exact same problems...and this is why I gave up using conky. If a solution is found, that would be great !

Flickering all the time with conky here too.

Plus, it's not something that everyone would really want. Most people don't really even care how much CPU percentage they're using.

Not important for ISO, but at the moment it's a pain to get conky working in KDE

Why not use the panel plugins of xfce? I know, conky is much cooler and you search for wm independent stuff. But the ISO comes with xfce as default, so those panel plugins can be used.

And finally I think users who are interested in this information are able to install conky/gkrellm/panel plugins on their own
