Warning: Screensaver is old (SOLVED)

Hi,

I did switch on my PC with SalixOS 14.1 32 bit (MATE desktop). It appears (after booting) alert window with the text "XScreensaver is very old".

http://linux.remontsw.eu/salixos/screensaver_old.jpg

I did upgrade manualy from shell. It writes me "nothing to upgrade"

slapt-get --update
slapt-get --upgrade

All is good, nothing to upgrade :-(

0 upgraded, 0 reinstalled, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove, 0 not upgraded.

WHat to do? Compile manualy xscreensaver? THNX.

Rene

Hello.

Immediately after boot a Salix64 Xfce 14.1, even before the desktop is up, a warning of XScreenSavers appears. If I open the configuration, the same message appears in another form.

Code: Select all

XScreenSaver

Warning:

This version of xscreensaver is VERY OLD!
Please upgrade!

http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/

(If this is the latest version that your distro ships, then
your distro is doing a disservice. Build from source.)
I disabled XScreenSaver for now.

Hello Rene.

Already OK.
You are able to download and compile and I also. But not everyone can do that too. Therefore, the problem is not solved, in my opinion.

Hello westms,

you're right. Good reminder. My solution is "first aid" and the procedure is not for all (like you wrote "...not everyone can do that too").

Procedure step by step for all.

1. Run terminal and login like root.
sudo su
...

2. Go to the some temporary folder.
cd /tmp

3. Download and extract source of xscreensaver.

wget http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/xscreen ... .29.tar.gz
(download the file xscreensaver-5.29.tar.gz)

tar -zxvf xscreensaver-5.29.tar.gz
(extract xscreensaver-5.29.tar.gz)

cd xscreensaver-5.29
(go to the extracted folder)

4. Compile new version of xscreensaver

./configure
make clean all
make install

5. Restart PC.

When you know better (easier) procedure, write me it, please. THNX. I was looking for tgz file on slacky.eu, but I didn't find it. Therefore this longer procedure.

Apparently xscreensaver is hardcoded to give that warning after a version is one year old. See this.

Best course of action is to ignore it.

I did not want to criticize. Your intention is clear to me.

Your step-by-step procedure is well described and will do it.

My thought, which I had not set out, was:
I am a technically oriented person and now long-time software developer and can help me myself, in limits. But what does a non-technical when compiling the sources and warnings are running across the screen, as indeed often happens? Most non-technical people I know would not dare carry out such operations. For these people, a solution would be to get a new program version from the distributer. When one can give a click-through-menus marathon, which anyone can follow and allows a solution, it is ok too.

But thanks, now I could replace the screensaver without having to worry.

Hello westms,

I understand. I know, that it was not criticism ;) Your reminder was really good.
When you know better (easier) procedure, write me it, please. THNX. I was looking for tgz file on slacky.eu, but I didn't find it. Therefore this longer procedure.
My reminder about better procedure was meant good ;) It is because of my English. I know technical English from programming languages. English is not my native language.

Have a nice summer day

Just as I understood it.

My English is a mixed affair. Written and heard I understand English quite well. But I can express myself only badly. As a result, I always try to express as short as possible - often too short.

Have a nice sunny weekend

Disabled nag screen that says "This version of XScreenSaver is very old!
Please upgrade!" when the age of the software exceeds 12 months.
Latest updated Xscreensaver package will be available via Gslapt or slapt-get upgrade within the next day,
