Display issue on install

Hi everyone
I'm working on installing Salix Xfce 14.1 cd iso i686 32bit on a new-ish sony vaio 14e.
I had the 64 bit distribution working OK on this computer, but decided to switch due to a variety of different things not working that went great on a previous 32 bit install.
However, I've run into trouble right out of the gate.
The system loads appropriately until 'darkstar login:'
At that point I get an error from startx:
Fatal server error
No screens found
Apparently the parameters for my laptop monitor are not recognized.
Looking around, I see that the solution is probably to edit
/ect/x11/xorg.conf
however, I am not savvy enough to get this done without the GUI.
What is the command for a text editor in command line?
ee does not seem to be included.
Next, what must I change in xorg.conf to allow the display to work?
Thanks so much for any help
B

Did the 64bit edition work without any manual tweaking on your part?

It did actually.
The GUI came right up with no problem.
I'm trying different versions, but running into the same thing

Did you recreate all relevant hard drive partitions and therefore / or recreate the relevant file systems during the 32-bit installation? Did you perform a fresh new 32-bit installation or did you install over the 64-bit installation.

Also the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log would be helpful for evaluation.

I used the same partitions, but reformatted them.
I can't really post the xorg log because I only have the one computer.
Luckily I'm running a dual boot with windows or I'd be dead in the water.
Guess I'll keep trying different distros or go back to 64bit if I have to.
What is the name/command for the text editor in command line?
