Hello
However much I try, no activity is displayed by claws mail, to indicate it is contacting the server, fetching the e-mails, etc. I have followed the settings recommended on the gmail instructions page. Claws mail does not appear here, but I followed the instructions and set the values as recommended for thunderbird.
What might I be not doing correctly?

did you enable the logging of the network protocol in Claws Mail? If necessary, activate it and tell the error messages that occur.
In November 2014, I suddenly had the problem that Claws-mail could not log into the GMX mail server. I then found out that GMX must have changed something on using SSL. To try a solution I built and installed the latest Claws Mail and thus solved my problem. A few days later, this latest Claws Mail version was made to the current project version on slackbuilds.org. Maybe this is a solution for you too.

Got fed up with claws mail. Installed Thunderbird. It asked me only three questions
1. IMAP or POP?
2. Username?
3.Passwd?
Rest, it did every thing by itself. Configured everything, downloaded the emails, synchronized
In salix os, claws mail is the second waste package I have come across, the first being SAKIS 3G
I have un-installed both the waste packages
