adding xfce desktop to openbox ...no background/icons

My mom found this PC which used to have Windows XP on it. Thankfully the HDD crashed so bad it was unrecoverable, so a new HDD meant a new OS.
So naturally, I put Salix on it. The only one I had was Salix OpenBox 14.1. I was adding XFCE to it (since my mom wants this PC to be a birthday present to a family member), and ran into my first glitch:
There is no background wallpaper, nor is there Icons while using XFCE.
Is there a file that XFCE uses to add this funbction? What am I missing?
