[SOLVED] MATE 14.1 installer blank screen, Radeon R7 250

I'm trying to get MATE installed on a spare SSD, but after the installer disk kernel loads, the screen goes blank. My 990FX chipset requires the (huge.s) iommu=soft parameter. My video card is a discreet Asus Radeon R7 250 (this chip has been around for a while, it's fairly well supported, driver or no driver). My question is, is there a parameter for my video card so I can make it all the way to the installer screen? I've also tried vga=788 and vga=791, no joy.
My monitor is connected to the video card via an HDMI cable, that doesn't seem to be a problem with other installers or live disks, *scratching head*. I never use the proprietary ATI driver, I'm not fond of it, but usually the non-free firmware gets my video card to work just fine in a GUI.
Edit: Just for a point of information, I previously, successfully booted the Xfce 14.1 live disk with just iommu=soft.
