Lost X

In my Salix-14,1 Xfce4 main working box I cannot open X any longer. The error is "no screens found"

I was working in Slackel which has in /etc/fstab my working box as "defaults, noauto". I did not mount it while in Slackel

When I went back to my working box X would not open. I have a recent back-up of /etc. I extracted
from that tar file /etc/X11 over to /etc. X wouldnot open. Then I extratced the entire /etc to /.
Still X will not open.

Now I am at a loss.

A guess: you messed up with LILO/grub and you're not booting the Salix kernel, you're booting the Slackel kernel.

Not that I am aware of. I have used the same kernel for some time w/o any
problem.
Changed now to another, previous kernel which worked as well, now again X
won't open.

It says as well cannot start cups.

Something freaky going on.

did "xfs_repair /dev/sdb2" nothing doing as well.

I have on my second old HD (/dev/hda5) a mirror of my working box which I am
using right now. Same kernel et all.

I will reformat working box /dev/hdb2 then copy /dev/hda5 over.

Have a good laugh ;-)

first:
/code/
Linux smartbro 3.18.11-smp #2 SMP Tue Apr 7 14:36:46 CDT 2015 i686 Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5400 @ 2.70GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
[/code/

then back changed to

/code]
Linux smartbro 3.14.24-smp #2 SMP Fri Nov 14 18:34:21 CST 2014 i686
Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5400 @ 2.70GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
[/code]

with both kernels X will not open any longer in /dev/sdb2, however, workig well in /dev/sda5
from which I am postng this with kernel-3.18.11. :-)

A guess.
Some how, you have been mixed up some packages with slackware current from slackel.
reinstall X , libpng, gdm from command line. or everything.

The only packes I use from Slackel is the kernel.

Here once more what happend:

In the morning I boot into my working box on /dev/sdb2. X opens. Check my mails, etc. When done
rebooted into Slackel on /dev/sdb5 to work on some problems I had there. Was able to finally fix it.
In Slackel fstab I have a mount point to /dev/sdb2. It is noauto. I did not mount it during this session.

Before noon I rebooted from Slackel into my working box on /dev/sdb2 and X would not open
any longer.

I opend my spare workig box on /dev/hda5 run "xfs_repair /dev/sdb2". The first run showed a long
list of wrong inodes. The repair did not fix the problem.

Could Slackel have caused the problem? As a precaution I will delete in fstab in Slakel the mount
point /dev/sdb2.

I will now reformat /dev/sdb2 then copy /dev/sd5 into /dev/sdb2.
