what is the startup sequence?

I'd like to understand how is the startup sequence for Salix (Fluxbox). Sorry in advance for my underdevelopped tech level!

From what i understand it's like this: Starting the machine the bios is looking for a bootloader (lilo in my case) then is started X11 and then the login(or display)manager, gdm in my case. And then the desktop session (fluxbox).

My question aims to how and where is started X11 automatically. I know, running a cl login i can do startx to do the same. But what's the equivalent in a standard bootup?

Thanks in advance for your patience.

Thanks a lot, i got it (reading too the X section). It's the runlevel doing the magic ;) Just one specific question: is it better to run the login-manager as a daemon or not?

There shouldn't be much difference either way.
