exact disk space requirement Salix 14.1 Openbox

Not really a problem, but I'm going to try installing the Openbox version on an eeepc 700 4g, which
has an exceedingly small HD, about 4 gb.
Would 2.5 gb be enough?

At a guess, not really. But why not give it as much room as you can, and see? How much room you need depends on what you will install (including a lot of updates before even starting), and should include a reasonable amount of empty space for the filesystem to work properly; so there really is no exact figure.

This may also be a situation in which it is worth installing Basic (not Core) and adding applications as you need them - some of the default selection are quite large, such as Libreoffice, though I can't remember if that's included with Openbox.

Do

Code: Select all

sudo slapt-get --clean
after your initial general package upgrade, that should free up some space.

Thanks, yes I could just do without a dedicated /home, probably not necessary on this which will only be for travel.

If me. I would install / and /home together inside of 4 gig internal phison ssd drive. Using ext2 or f2fs on that piece of cheap phison to limit writes. I owned 2 eeepcs at one time.
So I know their hardware limitations. Plus I was a moderator at eeepc forums till the site went bust.
Then insert the biggest SD card I have and format it as f2fs or ext2 to limit writes so as not to wear the sd card early.

Then edit /etc/fstab to automount the sd card on bootup.
Then move /home to the sdcard.

What I wrote up awhile ago for stuff like this. Different distro though.

Anyways. If I had your netbook. That is how I would roll with a Salix Openbox install. Then no worries on filling up / . I kept my AntiX install at about 3 gigs on that 4 gig phison ssd I had till I sold that eeepc.

PS. Rox file manager can be installed in Salix.

If your eeepc is the 512MB ram model. Don't expect much unless you run swap file on it. Big browsers running youtube choke a bit on 512MB of ram.
My newer netbooks are 1 gig of ram at a minimum and intel atom n270 instead of your intel celeron 800 hz cpu.
Just food for thought is all.

Aha, you're a goldmine roky. Will check this out carefully before installing.

I like the 700 series, about the most compact net book i guess. Got this from Slovenia for 30 euros with postage
and got a new US keyboard (Scandinavian only available from Asus for 37 euros and not really needed). Missed my 701 that got stolen.

Luckily this has 1GB memory as it came with XP. Which seems to have 370 mb free on a clean install.. ridic

Maybe antiX is the sensible choice here but would be nice to try slack on it.

Just in case my salix fluxbox intro install is any help

http://forum.salixos.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=6131

I run Slackel also.

http://www.slackel.gr/

These M&A netbooks I have. Use a bigger drive than I had in my eeepcs. My eeepcs were a 900 4/16 gig dual sdd and my 701SD was a 8 gig ssd model.
I sold them back when they were still worth a good dollar in the USA and used the money to buy me a grouped set/lot of 4 M&A Touchscreen netbooks
with better specs than the eeepcs.

Just in case left click ever goes south on you. I posted a how to fix even that. Those tap pad clickers are cheap , easy to break, hardware also.

http://yatsite.blogspot.com/2010/08/lef ... c-900.html

The broken video link for how the button on the inside of left click looks is on youtube. My broken link points to eeepc forums which is no more anymore.

Above video was made in Linux Blender, (not by me however).

PS. I am a AntiX team member. So I keep my fingers on that any ways. I wanted to learn Salix and stumbled onto Slackel as a learning experience for me.
I don't post here much because of my moderator commitments with AntiX and another Forum . Mac and Windows users mostly. Though I convert a few younger members
to try linux there and answer the 20 questions I get there from nerves.

Salix OpenBox should run just as good as AntiX as far as ram and cpu usage goes. Since I run both. I can vouch for that statement.
I really enjoy how trouble free my Salix Fluxbox 14.1 and Slackel Fluxbox 14.1 install are on my netbooks.

Thanks :)) Yes I know you from antiX forum.
I know the trackpad is bad on 700 series, had to replace it, or parts of it back when parts were still avaialble.
I like to use a mouse, oldfashioned but
Disk space is not that much of a consideration, this is for travel only.
Maybe antix core would be the thing, barebones xfce and the few programs i need

gotta make up my mind to wipe XP was going to dd but too much bother
