I'm currently using Slackware64 as my main operating system and I would like to try Salix but I'm only on 56-k dialup connection and I can't download the installation media because the Sourceforge mirrors I've tried will not allow resumable downloads and the iso files are too large to get in one online session (or one day).

My question is: can I download the Salix packages I need/want and use the Slackware installer to install them [using the 'install from local packages' option -- this is how I originally installed Slackware] and would I then be running Salix proper or is there some "special sauce" in the Salix installer I would be missing if I did it that way?

You can keep using your slackware64 system and add packages from the salix repository as you see fit. Easy way to do this is to install slapt-get/gslapt from the salix repositories first and then use them to manage your packages.

You can also do what you're suggesting, but no reason to reinstall if you already have a working slackware64 system.

Okay, that's what I'll do then - overlay the Salix packages on top of my Slackware installation; which is very stable and works well with this hardware (dual-core atom desktop). This looks to fulfill exactly what Slackware is missing (desktop oriented / deps checking) and no need to compile so many SlackBuilds.
