I found setting Salix to 1600x900 yielded readable text (besides the slight interpolation fuzziness) to try kernel upgrading. And, well, that kernel upgrade was super easy. From 4.4.19 to 5.4.80. Not sure why a decade go I only glanced at kernel upgrades and moved on. Maybe I was looking at compiling from source stuff.
Anyway, after said kernel upgrade to 5.4.80, Salix is handling DVI-HDMI without issue.
Not sure how HDMI-HDMI would have fared since I forgot to test that before the kernel upgrade. I made a dd backup of the partition before the upgrade though, so if you're interested, I can rather readily revert and check for you, just let me know.
