Text Editor

Post by hugok »

Nice post @gapan, I really enjoyed reading it :D https://blog.salixos.org/post/choosing- ... xt-editor/

As I said before, in this post: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=8405 I would prefer to have the Mousepad installed by default since it is the default editor of Xfce but I also admit that I didn't know all these technical details about CSD.

I also don't dislike L3afpad, my only cons has to do with the translation of L3afpad being in Brazilian Portuguese and not Portuguese (Portugal).

I already made a PR https://github.com/stevenhoneyman/l3afpad/pull/36 on github for some time now to fix and update this problem but the fact is that it seems that L3afpad is inactive since February 2022, as you wrote in your post.

There is also an PR on github for the Greek language: https://github.com/stevenhoneyman/l3afpad/pull/37

Cheers ;)

Hi hugok, glad you liked it!

Actually, in the updated package that is now in the repos, I have applied the update to the greek translation. I also tried to use the patch to update the Portuguese translation, but it did not apply cleanly, there are a lot of failures. It's funny, I hadn't realized it was you that provided the translation. You nick is there, I just didn't notice.

Are you talking about L3afpad? I never translated it, I just created a PR on GitHub to improve the translation but it hasn't been merged yet.
What is the source of L3afpad package that is in the Salix repositories? I can translate the Portuguese (Portugal) translation.

Yes, I got the patch from your pull request at the l3afpad github, but it wouldn't apply as you see. Maybe it's because I tried to apply it to version 0.8.18.1.11 instead of git master.

Sources are here:

:? :?

Send you the updated Portuguese translation to your email.

I just updated the pt.po translation file from the sources

Can you make a new l3afpad package or patch the pt.po like the el.po?

Done, new package is now in the repos. Wait until your mirror syncs. Thanks!

Hello gapan,

thank you very much for this test of text editors.

on my configuration with a 7200rpm hdd, on the first start mousepad take almost 3 seconds to open, after that it's almost instantaneous.
leafpad, l3afpad and featherpad(a little bit slower) don't have that slowness on first start.

I saw that you did the tests with very good equipment but did you feel this slowness at the first start?

I can't say that I did. And in any case, I wanted to remove first-run bias as a factor, so I usually started each app a couple of times and then started recording to measure start up time.

I didn't want to measure cold starts (proper way to do it would be after a reboot), since the use case for a simple text editor is that you launch it all the time to note minor stuff and edit a file here or there.

In Geany press [SHIFT][CTRL][V]. Cannot do that on my system.
