There's also a menuentry to add custom parameters in the bootoptions menu to make it easier for users not familiar with grub. Add there the parameter acpi=off

Check to see if this solves your problem.
Thanks! I could not make it work. I now strongly suspect the issue is somewhat temperature
related. See my post now under Live CD.
