Would this help?

(although it specifically says it is not meant to be used by scripts, it's still useful for simple backup....)

Re: cheap laptop or netbook advice
For traveling, I found the smaller screen the best (although it must have a good definition, my 10 inch features 1366x768 and is very clear).
Bigger machines I had before quickly got damaged. Also autonomy is a must, 5/6 hours is great.

Re: After install, keyboard and mouse are inoperative
Some error in LILO's configuration so that the wrong kernel is associated with the wrong system could do that. Can you post /etc/fstab, /etc/lilo.conf as well as the output of fdisk -l ? Or use LiloSetup (not the same as liloconfig) from menu system in Salix (it is usually pretty good at setting mul...

Re: strange characters on command line
As Gapan suggested, did you try creating a new user? and try reproducing this problem from a standard setup?

Re: Task Coach 1.3.24
Actually I'm quite unfamiliar with zim. I did not realize it could be used for tasks, I thought it was mainly for notes.
Taskcoach organise tasks (within tasks if you wish) with deadlines, importance, context etc... I was using it with a loose GTD system before I switched to ToodleDo online.
