login screen freeze

Hello, new to salix and very tempted to try. I installed it on an old 2004 laptop. Installation went well, when I rebooted I got the login and then freeze. I've seen that there was a question for the same problem in the forum but it was resolved by changing intel video card driver but it's a ati radeon. I had the same problem with zenwalk before.

Here's the laptop hardware:
Intel® Pentium® M 1.6 GHz (1 Mo de cache L2)
Northbridge Intel® 855GME
Southbridge Intel® 82801DBM
512 Mo DDR SDRam (2x256 MB)
ATI MOBILITY Radeon 9600

Any ideas?

What driver is used? Can you switch to a terminal screen? Is there any proprietary driver that might be used with your card? Maybe you can try removing all other video drivers except xf86-video-vesa.
