unable to play any video DVDs.

Post by xirtyllo »

Hi everybody,

I am unable to play video DVDs with salix... with any program.. does anybody else has this?

I tried to change the device in VLC and Xine, e.g. from /dev/dvd to /dev/sr0 or /dev/dvdwriter, /dev/dvdwriter0 with no success, even if in every case the drive starts spinning when i click play.

Strange thing is that i have two computers both of them with salix installed, and both of them have the same problem.
I have downloaded the multimedia codecs with salix codecs installer, and i have double checked that i have libdvdcss libdvdnav and libdvdread installed.

I tried with different DVDs (I remember i was able to play them with Slackware 13, and I can play them on Windows).

VLC: i get the following error:
"Your input can't be opened:VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/dvd'. Check the log for details."
so i checked the log and it says: "main error: open of `dvd:///dev/dvd' failed: (null)"
from the terminal i see the following output:

Code: Select all

from the terminal i see the following errors:

Hello,
I am no tech so maybe I will not give the right advice. I googled for some of your error in VLC output and found following link which could provide some clues:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=792554
maybe this can help.
Btw, I am using Salix 13.0 with VLC, codecs and libdvd nav/read/css installed. DVD can be played with no issues.

Is it with any DVD, or with a specific one?

Thank you mandog, laplume and gapan for your input,

gapan put me in the right direction,
In fact I borrowed some commercial DVD movies and they all play fine...
the problem is only with a serie of instructional DVD videos that I have... they are home-made so i guess there might be something diffirent in them. But i can play them fine with WinDVD in Windows...
I checked and they look like a standard dvd structure with AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders in it.
(but now that i think about it i'm not sure that i was playing them with Slackware13 last year...)

Also note that nowadays there are a lot of copy protected commercial DVDs that won't play, too (I'm not talking about CSS).

I'm trying to use Parole to play DVD's... it plays the video but there's no sound output. Audio CD's plays fine, however.

ps: I'm on 13.2alpha1.

Do you have sound playing mp3s? And have you installed all codecs?
