Upgrading KDE

Try creating some activities, and in particular select "different activity for each desktop" in your virtual desktop pager. You'll encounter some very weird behaviors such as sliding wallpaper and widgets that don't want to move where you tell them to. They didn't get activities working right until 4.4.5.

Ok, I am aware of the Plasma Widget issue of which you speak. I do work with QT Designer and PyQT...
There was a solution out there for people using 4.4.3 where as Widget didn't install nor run properly then would move and over all functional problems with Some Plasma Widgets..
This situation seemed to solve by adding the missing package kdebindigs] in Gslapt
.......Can't remember if I added it in Salix as it has been trouble free but I did in Debian..
Most of KDE is written in C++ but not most Plasma Widgets many are written in Python or a combo of Python and C++.. So adding the kdebindings seems to cure the situation for all the Widgets that I have tried....but then I haven't tried them all..

I went ahead and installed the bindings, and that took care of most of it... although there are still some oddities attached to using activities in conjunction with virtual desktops. Hmmm. For me it's no sweat to upgrade to alien's 4.4.5 and that solves the problem right there, but that's hardly a solution I could propose to Linux newcomers. Although I suppose it could be argued that most noobs aren't really going to make much use of virtual desktops and activities anyway... oh, hell, I don't know.

Thanks. My big thing here is that i have a noon-oriented Linux website full of tutorials, and with the site undergoing an overhaul at the moment I'm looking for a new distro to recommend for Linux newcomers. Ubuntu's not stable enough, openSUSE is too bloated, SimplyMepis adds a bunch of silly extras that nobody needs... you get the idea. Basically I'm looking for something like Slackware or Arch, only with a graphical installer and GUI package management utilities. I really like Chakra but it's still beta and has it's problems. Salix is looking really good to me; I'm just trying to make sure that I've got all my bases covered before I recommend it or start writing tutorials about installing/configuring it. I don't want to demonstrate desktop activities assigned to different virtual desktops, and then have readers yelling that it breaks stuff! I personally use Arch on my home desktop computer and Slackware on pretty much everything else.

I run Salix with KDE its as solid as a rock in fact its the most stable version of 4.4.3 I've used and going back and forth with Arch using KDE 4.6 I don't really notice that much difference ie neither system crashes Salix uses far less ram, amarok, kcd, are still crap dolphin does not crash in either so there you go i don't use widgets I use my own custom conky for info
