Hello, I'm new ;)

Post by neruson1981 »

Hi, my name is Sean. I'm from Portland, Or. I'm 29 years old and have been using Ubuntu/Linux Mint for the last 3 years. Both those distros are fine distros, but after 3 years of using them I wanted to learn more about Linux, so I started looking into distros like Arch Linux, I decided the installation of Arch might be biting off more than I could chew at the moment (plus I only have one working machine right now - my desktop died - so if anything went wrong I wouldn't be able to troubleshoot.) and began looking into Slackware and found Salix in the process through Distro Watch. I have to say, that so far, I've learned more about Linux in the last week or two than I did in 3 years with Ubuntu & Mint. I figured out how to compile programs from source fairly easily, I've only ran into one problem so far. and since I figured how to customize it I'm also loving the XFCE desktop, which I'm surprised - I hated Xubuntu (been using Gnome up until now) :D....

Welcome...
I installed my first Slackware in 1995-96.. In fact I believe it was called Slackware 96'.. :)
I have seen in the following in print quite a few times.....in one form or another..
"If you want to learn Red Hat, Debian or SuSe installed them. If you want to learn Linux install Slackware."
Slackware ( Manjaro ) Salix, AntiX, Bunsen, Calculate

Welcome!

Installing Arch was certainly challenging for me, and remains a work in progress; the Arch documentation is very thorough, though. I have it in a partition alongside Salix (dual booting). But it's just for learning - like you I love Salix.

I am having fun :) I like computers - never took one class in them other than typing class in high school, but I've always been a fast learner when concerning them... When I was in high school I learned basic HTML just by viewing the source on a website and staring at the code until it made sense :)

So far I like Salix. I plan on keeping it on my laptop (my laptop has never run so well), but I'm going to build a new desktop this summer and I want to install Arch with a Gnome desktop on it - maybe a dual boot with Salix too..
