I always tell Firefox to ask me where to put downloads. The result in 13.2: the download is aborted as soon as I have clicked to select the location.
wget did the job, and it also works when I reset to the default, i.e. not asking the location.
I also turn off the "Show downloads window" feature ... turning it back on didn't resolve the issue, but it is still on, so it may have made a necessary but not sufficient contribution.
