salix 13.37beta2 problem installing nvidia drivers

Post by sicarius »

Hello, I'm new to Salix and I've installed 13.37 beta2 and I have problem with installing nvidia drivers.
I installed the kernel sources, but running the nvidia installer gives me an error.
invidia-installer.log says:
ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most
frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or
improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs
from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as
rivafb, nvidiafb, or nouveau is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel
module from obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s), or
NVIDIA GPU installed in this system is not supported by this NVIDIA
Linux graphics driver release.

Please see the log entries 'Kernel module load error' and 'Kernel
messages' at the end of the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for
more information.

My system is running on an FL90 laptop and it has a GF 8600M GT graphic card which supposedly is supported by this driver, so I am at a loss understanding this error...

If it's a kernel bug, there is now a new 2.6.37.6 kernel in slackware-current. It will appear in salix mirrors as soon as they sync, so maybe in a few hours. You could try upgrading to the new kernel and installing the nvidia driver again. But in any case, I was under the impression that unless you want the nvidia proprietary driver for playing 3D games or for compiz and such fancy stuff, you're just as good with the nouveu driver in current. I don't have any nvidia cards, so I don't really know if that's true, just what I've heard/read from others.

I have the same graphics chip in my Dell M1530 but I haven't had any problems with the 2.6.37.x kernels (this includes both architectures) and the nVidia drivers.

I have an 8600 GT (though not the mobile version) and the Nvidia binary compiled fine for me on 64bit current.
