Black screen: Unable to handle kernel paging... [OK]

Post by Andyun »

Salix OS 13.37 i486 Xfce.
After entering the password to run the Lilo Setup, there is a black screen. To get back in session, I click Alt+Ctrl+F*-F7.

Is this always reproducible on this machine? Can you reproduce it on other machines?

This indicates a problem with your hardware as I don't know of any other user with such a problem. Of course, it could be also a kernel bug specific to your hardware, but I consider that unprobable. Please test your memory with memtest86+. Leave it running for some hours or over night and report back if there were any errors.

So occurs always. No other machine. Memory is OK. Anything similar was not earlier.

You can't have tested your memory properly with memtest within less than an hour. You must leave it running much longer.

Something else you can try is disabling additional kernel modules, which weren't originally shipped with the kernel. Like nvidia, ati or vbox drivers.

Run this command as root:

Code: Select all

dmesg > dmesg.log
Now copy the content of the file dmesg.log in the same directory into your posts and wrap it with 'Code'-Tags.

Re: Black screen: Unable to handle kernel paging...

Post by Akuna »

I had the exact same experience a couple days ago with the combo lilosetup/salix-13.37 and an asus AK6 laptop.
No problems on other machines.
Lilosetup on latest Gparted LiveCD does not bug on that machine.
Lilosetup with previous version of Salix did not bug on that machine.

I'm not in front of that machine ATM, but from memory & looking at your screen, some line are very similar if not identical. Particularly regarding the modules linked and jfsyc not tainted, etc...

I'll look at this closer tomorrow & report back.

Then I suggest trying different kernels (newer/older), e.g. the one from 13.1.

@Andyun: What hardware is causing the problems for you? Why is there another backtrace in your kernel log (related to ?btrfs?)?

I do not use btrfs, I use ext3. This is related with os-prober (I tried 1.42 and 1.47), because without os-prober the Lilo Setup (I tried 0.2.7 and 0.2.8) is runs without problems.
I have no problems with the hardware.

Yes it is caused by os-prober here too. And I use Salix 64-bit.
Here is the strace output for os-prober:
