A warning: DON"T use prelink with Salix 13.37.

Post by GJones »

Not sure if this is the right forum, but I thought it would be good to warn people... The version of glibc used in Salix 13.37 is incompatible with prelink, to the point that using prelink will break almost every program on your system.

(Yes, I got bitten by this. Probably serves me right for trying prelink kludgery.)

Anyway, if your system has been rendered unbootable by this bug, the best solution is to:
1. Boot from a live CD and mount your system partitions
2. Chroot into the mounted root directory using the prelink binary with -au as the arguments, like so:

chroot /mnt/rootpart /usr/sbin/prelink -au

3. Let it run, and unmount the partitions and reboot.

This *should* make your install bootable again.

Thanks for the warning. BTW, when I tried prelink a few years ago, I couldn't find any noticeable improvement at all. I'm convinced that the only actual effect it has on speed is placebo.

Funny you should mention that... I tried it on an Ubuntu machine recently, and it seemed to make no difference at all in desktop and application loading time.

Same here. Better buy a fast SSD nowadays ;)

Amen. My netbook has a very decent SSD even though the system is going on two years old. I absolutely love it both in terms of performance and in terms of having a really quiet little system :D

I've added a SSD to my notebook running KDE. Finally KDE is useable now and no problems with long application starting times left. And yes, the hard disk noise is gone, too. Now there's only some beeping left, maybe caused by badly designed DC/DC converters (the only drawback of that Lenovo notebook).
