This makes my Salix compromise as a packager meaningless, since I was using Salix in the LAN I administered, and can't (for reasons unknown) install Salix 13.37 properly in my other desktop.

Your work on python-gpod is appreciated. Perhaps you'll reconsider and pursue the installation issue here on the Forum?
