13.1 boots as far as login screen, keyboard, mouse dead

Post by mimosa »

This isn't really a problem because I never use it, but it's an oddity. The other three Salixes I have on this machine (all 13.37) are fine, so it doesn't seem to be anything hardware related. I'm just posting this for its curiosity value.

Incidentally, I tried to get into it like this, which I'm sure isn't the correct way. I should say I had a few slightly different goes beforehand, and got a message about X being "locked" after too many false starts, till I fixed it.So that may be reflected in these messages, but it isn't the original problem:

Code: Select all

root[vanilla]# mount /dev/sda1 /tmp/xmonad
root[vanilla]# chroot --userspec=mimosa /tmp/xmonad
bash: /root/.bashrc: Permission denied
mimosa[/]$ startx

Maybe you can't do this from within X (on the 'host' instance of Linux) but I did try from a true terminal with no WM running, with similar results. Just harder to copy and paste ...

No. I can't remember how I installed it, but it was my main Salix, xfce, then I added xmonad a good six months ago. Until I installed Thenktor's wonderful Openbox beta, I used it occasionally to boot into xfce if I felt nostalgia for the mouse.

Until recently, it worked fine! Probably last time I used it, I did something-or-other and unwittingly broke the thing.

As for the chrooting, I also tried this from Ratpoison RC1 to Beta, with similar results. But that's just a bit of fun - if I seriously needed to fix the installation, X wouldn't be needed to do so. However, when Ratpoison is released, I will tidy up this machine and just get rid of it.
