Hi to all!
I have the Salix Ratpoison edition installed on one of my PC's and need to adjust the text/fonts for more comfortable reading on the screen. The problems are as follows:
1) The default text size is way too small for comfortable reading, how do I enlarge the size of the text?
2) The default text is way too contrasty and razor sharp (edge sharpness of the fonts are about to seer my eyes out!), is there a way to soften the edges of the text against the background a bit?
3) How do I change the default color of the text to make it all green against an all black background inside all windows (just like old vintage computer terminals... It was done this way for a good reason in the old days!)
4) The default font style is terrible, how do I change the font style to something more readable?
Thank you
How do I change the default text in Ratpoison windows?
Re: How do I change the default text in Ratpoison windows?
What text size? Where? The terminal? GTK windows? Menus? Ratpoison itself? Where?punchy71 wrote:1) The default text size is way too small for comfortable reading, how do I enlarge the size of the text?
Again, what text? Where? Do you mean the font in the ratpoison help screen and menus and xterm? If so, you really believe that a blurry font is easier on the eyes? Really?punchy71 wrote:2) The default text is way too contrasty and razor sharp (edge sharpness of the fonts are about to seer my eyes out!), is there a way to soften the edges of the text against the background a bit?
Yes, I believe that reason was: "it's either bright green or bright orange, pick one". Again, what text? Re: How do I change the default text in Ratpoison windows?
Ratpoison is very configurable. Just tinker with it - though I don't expect you can do anything too fancy in terms of fonts. Larger should be doable though.
Most interaction in actual use is with apps anyway, and that has nothing to do with the WM. Where do you find you're troubled by the visual interaction with ratpoison itself? In the menus? You could just define keyboard shortcuts for frequent tasks. I find I don't use the menu much myself, and when I do, I make a mental note to create a shortcut.
Also I suppose there could be issues about video configuration on the machine you're using. Have you tried Slaix live editions other than Ratpoison? Were the fonts ok?

Pretty much all of them. Terminal, Vimprobable2 web browser, Midnight commander, MidnAlsa Mixer ider, Wired Network manager, Gslapt, Htop, etc. etc...
Even the application menu you get after typing Ctrl t r is tiny.

You could try to change the dpi (namely increase them). This would affect all applications:

Re: How do I change the default text in Ratpoison windows?
At the terminal I typed: xdpyinfo | grep dimensions
and it gave me the response of:
dimensions: 1680 x 1050 pixels
then I typed: xdpyinfo | grep "dots per inch"
and it gave me the response of:
resolution: 96x96 dots per inch
Since I want to make the text larger I want to decrease the number of dots per inch not increase them don't I?

Re: How do I change the default text in Ratpoison windows?
I tried Ratpoison the other week and had the same trouble with fonts. Looking on the web, I find this
http://users.skynet.be/six/gpure/tech/lightdesktop.html
which links to the author's .fonts.conf file. It's not clear whether this is for Icewm or Ratpoison, but the approach might be worth trying. I haven't tried it myself, as Salix Ratpoison has had to leave the guest partition to make room for CentOS 6.1.
