Winning!

Post by Timmy! »

Hey guys. After a bit of recent misfortune (hard drive failure) I lost my Slackware installation, all of my SlackBuilds, packages, etc, etc. I have been using Slackware since 98, and have always been happy with it. I have installed and played with many different Linux distros on virtual machines, but nothing else gives me the same satisfaction as running the one and only. Well, except for FreeBSD, but that's a whole other thread for a whole other forum.

I heard about Salix awhile back, but hadn't gotten around to trying it out. Given the current events, I figured now was as good a time as any. I downloaded and burned the ISO last night and installed this morning. I am very impressed. I love the artwork and the extra administration programs. Very slick. I am also liking the more stripped down install. Usually distro branding and modifications to original software sets drives me crazy, but in this case it's welcome. Being a KDE user, and I was rather pleased to see Konq and Amarok excluded by default (as well as some of the other applications I ignore). This distro truly feels like it was custom made for me specifically. What a nice feeling.

It usually takes me days to customize a Slackware install to fit my needs, but Salix has already shaved off a majority of that time. All I have left to do is configure my MTA and build a few extra packages that I like, but I think I'll put that off until tomorrow and just enjoy the rest of my night. Thank you very much for this wonderful spin on Slackware! The dev team has done a great job putting this together.

Anyway, I think that's about all I have to say for now. I will definitely recommend Salix to Linux users off all skill levels. I hope your team will continue to put out an excellent product. The state of Linux today is rather disappointing, in my opinion. With all the rush to stick to ridiculous release cycles, often leading to sub-beta quality products, it's good to see that a few Linux distros still adhere to more conservative schedules.

Happy new year to you all, and again, thank you! :D
