I'm more used to lilo but I think update-grub should do it. However, try sg2conf, available from the repos.
Regarding blacklisting, I think what I found in mine was

As you'll have gathered, I'm now in my own pretty pickle, writing to you from Live! Not only am I having bootloader trouble, but I have no X. I think I may have downloaded and installed the wrong module package, which I'm going to look into now.
However, I'd recommend that before you light the blue touchpaper, you look for the 2.6.37 equivalents of those kernel packages you just downloaded and back them up somewhere safe and easy to find. Something like
