Flexing MATE

Post by deja69 »

Just wanted to offer a possible word of caution, just wondered if anyone could clarify?
From previous experience of installing a browser called 'Dolphin' in a KDE distribution,i had a whole heap of problems, which resulted in me having to jettison the whole thing.

My concern is with MATE,which is pretty cool :)
However there is a Flex app framework called Mate http://mate.asfusion.com/
In name it doesnt share the diacritic acute 'e' of its twin, but if a user installs it,could it cause problems?
Bearing in mind, the 'Dolphin' issue occured on a totally different distribution to SalixOS,and the compiling issues may be different.
What is Best Practice with regards to similar named applications?

As long as the actual file names don't match or don't share the same location there is no problem. Often configure scripts offers a transform name feature. So if that's implemented (correctly) that can offer a solution. But it might cause problems though as for example 3rd party applications usually expect specific executable names.
